4 Steps to the Perfect Built-In Wardrobe in Sydney

Step One: Planning The Space

The first thing that you need to determine is the amount of space that you have available to work with. Figure out the number of steps that need to be taken between your bed and closet. Will you be able to rearrange the furniture and other items inside your bedroom in order to increase the amount of space you have available without your bedroom feeling cramped?

Can you incorporate any of your furnishings, like a chest of drawers and vanity unit into your walk-in wardrobe?

Or would you prefer using the storage furniture that you have somewhere else or give it away to charity and then start all over again from scratch? Whenever you start thinking about what your various options are, you will be surprised at the amount of potential space that is available to you.

You will need to have storage space and aisle space inside your ward robe. If space is limited, you can have your storage units on one wall and wall-mounted shoe racks, hooks and other kinds of space-saving storage units can be used on the other wall.

When planning your space, think outside of the box as much as possible. If it doesn’t work to place your cabinetry up against a wall, then how about making it into a space divider and placing your bed on the outside wall of the wardrobe?

Step Two: The Layout

Examine the inside of your drawers and closet closely and make a list containing all of your items. Divide up your list into sections for items you can store on shelves or in drawers, items needing short hanging space and items needing full-length hangers. Then you need to determine how you want to arrange everything inside of the walk-in wardrobe.

There are a number of clever ways of maximizing space and configuring your wardrobe. You can use pull-out shelves for storing your shoes on. When you do this it will allow you to get rid of vertical space that is wasted while still being able to reach your shoes easily. Inexpensive basket and wire racking systems are also available that make it easy to locate folded clothes at a glance that you need, and that look great and are very easy to keep clean. There are even wall-hung wire storage systems that are quite versatile and can be customized the way you want them by using various components.

Step Three: The Finer Details

There are a couple of different kinds of internal fittings that can be used inside of a cabinet that can help you maximize the amount of space and offer storage for various things, which means you can stow them away behind whatever wardrobe doors you want to keep them out of sight.

Clothes Rails

The most obvious and first thing that you will want to have, if you are going to use your builtin ward-robe for the purpose of conventional clothes storage, are railings for hanging your clothes on. If you have lots of long coats or dresses, you might want to have only one rail. It is also possible to have two rails that are at different heights for hanging double the number of items within the space.

Drawers

Drawers that are inside of a cabinet can provide you with a nice, tidy space for storing smaller items of clothing such as underwear and t-shirts, as well as storing other things such as jewelry and make-up. This eliminates needing to have a bulky dresser inside your bedroom, which is excellent when space is limited.

Shelves

Shelves offer another form of storage. Built-in wardrobes that go from the floor all the way up to the ceiling will generally have shelves within the upper area. So that area can be used for storing things you don’t use on a frequent basis but need some place for, like luggage. Other shelves can be used lower down for keeping things you use on a more regular basis.

Racks

Different kinds of racks can be used within a wardrobe for holding certain items of clothing and so that they are kept in good condition. Some common examples of how this might be done are making good use of the inside floor space by having shoe racks on the bottom part of the wardrobe, racks for hanging bags on and tie racks.

Mirrors

Having mirrors placed inside or on the doors can assist you with getting ready. They can be place on the inside part of hinged ward-robe doors or inside the cabinet on the front part of the drawers – anyplace that is at the proper height for you. Alternatively you can have mirrors on the sliding doors of a wardrobe too.

Step Four: Obtain Quotes

Once you have a good idea about what size your walk-in cabinetry is and all that it includes, you can begin to obtain quotes. Make sure to have a very clear plan before you begin. Having notes and a scale drawing can be very helpful or you can simply write out a list that includes sizes of the shelving systems and storage units that you are going to need to have. Custom wardrobe builders will provide you with quotes. This can help you with fine-tuning your plans. If you select a flat pack DIY system, all of that careful planning that you do will help to ensure that you select all of the right components that you need for a new walk-in wardrobe.
